NPQH

Please note that applications for this iteration of NPQs are now closed - we hope to have news about the new suite of NPQs after Easter. If you are interested in studying an NPQ with us in the future then please Register for Updates

Who is it for?

NPQH is designed for those who are, or are aspiring to become in the near future, a headteacher or head of school with responsibility for leading a school, including a head or head of school with cross-school responsibilities, for example a National Leader of Education. If you are not sure about your suitability for the programme, please contact us and we will assist you.

The programme requires 4 full days out of school (or 8 sessions of one a half hours if delivered online), in addition to 9 days spent working in a placement school. This placement does not currently require you to be present in your placement school.

Assessment Task

NPQH assessment comprises two projects which are submitted as a portfolio. You will present the plan for your home school project to the school's governing body prior to implementation, and gather their feedback. You submit a written account of each project in a single portfolio to NETSP for assessment.

Project 1

  • Lead change at a whole-school level, lasting at least 2 terms, to improve pupil progress and attainment.

Project 2

  • Undertake a placement in a contrasting school (for example, by performance, pupil profile, geography etc.), lasting at least 9 working days.
  • Research the placement school's current and/or projected resource and capability challenges, and design an action plan to address these.

Assessment - NPQH

Your work is submitted directly to NETSP and assessed against the Department for Education (DfE) criteria for the award of your NPQH.

Assessment - NPQH with 40 Masters' credits

You can opt to have your NPQH work assessed against both the DfE and Newcastle University criteria to achieve Masters' credits as well as your NPQH.

NPQH with 40 Masters' credits incurs an additional cost of £400*. If you achieve the Masters' credits you can subsequently complete the Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Educational Leadership at Newcastle University next academic year. The cost of the remaining module of the PGCert is £1390*.

*This cost is for 2020/21, it may change in future years

Placements and Coaching

For Project 2 you will undertake a placement in a school. NETSP can provide contacts to help you to arrange this, or you may select another school subject to our approval.

All NPQH participants are entitled to 5 hours' free coaching from a NETSP coach. This facilitates critical reflection on and in practice and will encourage you to maintain a balance between theoretical understanding and practical expertise. Once we put you in touch, you can schedule your hours to suit you.
