Who is NPQML for?

NPQML is designed for those who are, or are aspiring to become, a middle leader with responsibility for leading a team, for example

  • A key stage or pastoral services leader
  • A curriculum area leader, a subject leader or head of department
  • A special educational needs and disabilities co-ordinator
  • A middle leader with cross-school responsibilities e.g. a Specialist Leader of Education.

The programme requires 4 full days out of school. If delivered online it requires 8 shorter online sessions (with the option for these to be completed outside of school hours)

Assessment - NPQML

The assessment for the NPQML programme involves running an improvement project in a team which lasts at least two terms. This project must be aimed at improving pupil progress and the capability of your team.

During your programme you will build a portfolio demonstrating how your project meets the assessment criteria. This will be submitted at the end of your programme. Our support and guidance will help you achieve this.

Once submitted, your work will be assessed against the Department for Education (DfE) criteria for the award of your NPQML.

Assessment - NPQML with 20 Masters' credits

You can opt to have your NPQML work assessed against both the DfE and Newcastle University criteria to achieve Masters' credits as well as your NPQML.

NPQML with 20 Masters' credits incurs an additional cost of £200*. If you achieve the Masters' credits you can subsequently complete the Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Educational Leadership at Newcastle University next academic year. The cost of the remaining module of the PGCert is £1500*.

*This cost is for 2020/21, it may change in future years
